Monte Christo was settled by a Frenchman by the name of Jean Desire Feraud in 1864. Feraud is well known for being a pioneer in the wine industry as he planted the first grapes in the local area and records show that he grew a large number of raspberry canes. When Feraud wasn’t busy in his thriving orchard he also served as the Clyde Mayor. Also he planted thyme in his herb garden which escaped and now thrives on the hills of Central Otago.
In the 1980’s raspberries returned to Monte Christo and are well known throughout the Central Otago region for their high quality.
Graeme and Estelle continue the tradition of producing high quality raspberries and running the iconic raspberry cafe known through out the lower South Island for their delicious desserts and real fruit ice creams.
